Blaze took a deep breath of fresh, evening air as he strolled down the street alone. Catrice had been reluctant to travel to his home, but he had insisted. After two days of travel, they had stopped at an inn just inside the border of the Onyx District for the night.

His district.

The thought usually brought a sense of security to his mind, but now all he could think of was what would happen if Catrice found out he was the High Crow here. Obviously, that wouldn’t exactly be beneficial to his mission, but it was more than that. He thought of the sweet honey cake she had prepared for him and the way she beamed when he had thanked her. If she knew he was still a Crow, what would she think of him? Would her eyes still sparkle when she looked at him, or would they stare blankly through him like they had after the raid?

He shook his head and turned a corner toward the blockade of soldiers at the edge of town. It was exactly those kinds of questions that would blur his judgment. It didn’t matter what she thought. What mattered was that she stayed in the room while he met one of his men, and so far, she had. He had told her he was making arrangements at the upcoming checkpoint so they could pass through undetected. Which was true. He was meeting with the Crow stationed at the border checkpoint, but not to bribe her for safe passage—like that would actually work with his Crows. He needed to send a few messages—messages he had written by candlelight while Catrice slept—before he arrived home.

Stopping short of the blockade, he leaned against the building that housed the soldiers’ quarters. His Crow should be here somewhere overseeing the checkpoint. He glanced at the soldiers standing on either side of the wide gate blocking the road. A crowd of people waited in line before the checkpoint, pulling out their papers and preparing any goods in their carts for inspection.

Catrice didn’t have any papers, and they had managed to skirt around the last checkpoint between the Amber and Silver Districts, but there were no such backroads leading to his district. He had made sure of it. His district was the most secure in all of Whittam, despite bordering the collapsing neighboring country of Rewon, which was another reason he’d decided to bring Catrice here.

The idea of bringing her to his home had been rather spontaneous, but his plan had become more detailed as they traveled. He wouldn’t have to worry about rival Crows or unwanted surprises in his district. If he was lucky, he wouldn’t even have to step foot in another Haven until he was arresting those inside. Catrice could contact all the Haven Elders from the confines of his house. He would have all their names and addresses delivered to him on a silver platter, and she would be none the wiser.

He rolled his shoulders, shoved his hands
